I was excited to read this book at first but a few chapters in, I felt that it was beginning to become to wordy and long winded。 It became a DNF for me about 30% in 。

I really wanted to like this book but it isn't at all what I expected。 I feel like it wanted to be a thriller but having finished I'm still not sure。 It was very slow to start but picked up about halfway in when it started to get exciting。 After that it started to go all over the place, almost ended but then picked up again and I felt like we were going round in circles。 Good premise but in my opinion could have been executed far better。 I really wanted to like this book but it isn't at all what I expected。 I feel like it wanted to be a thriller but having finished I'm still not sure。 It was very slow to start but picked up about halfway in when it started to get exciting。 After that it started to go all over the place, almost ended but then picked up again and I felt like we were going round in circles。 Good premise but in my opinion could have been executed far better。 。。。more

I was given an advanced copy of this novel by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 This was a confusing book which was highly disappointing。 Banner seems to have a good grasp on writing, but this book just did not hook me。 On to something better。

I was intrigued by the doppelgänger premise and the main character being a mortuary cosmetologist, but this one didn't quite land for me。 The main mystery is solved fairly quickly。 Half way through the story we know who the doppelgänger is and why she's in the same town as the MC。 The rest of the novel is more about the MC's grief and mental decline than anything else。 The grief and decline are believable, but everyone else's response to it wasn't。 The MC says and does some truly alarming things I was intrigued by the doppelgänger premise and the main character being a mortuary cosmetologist, but this one didn't quite land for me。 The main mystery is solved fairly quickly。 Half way through the story we know who the doppelgänger is and why she's in the same town as the MC。 The rest of the novel is more about the MC's grief and mental decline than anything else。 The grief and decline are believable, but everyone else's response to it wasn't。 The MC says and does some truly alarming things and there are barely any consequences for it。 These things occurring once and it's chalked up to her grief, I could see, but that it happens again and there is hardly any recourse felt utterly unbelievable。 We are also introduced to a bunch of other characters like her best friend, her colleagues, people tied to the doppelgänger but the MC is so suspicious of everyone and everything that we never get more than surface details。 They kind of pop in, add a few pieces of info, and then the MC goes back to being suspicious so it felt like we never really get to know anyone。 This includes the doppelgänger herself。 By the end we still know very little about her。 Fortunately this was a pretty quick read and the premise is very interesting (and a gorgeous cover too) but I definitely wanted more from it。Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for the eARC of "In Another Light。" A copy of this title was provided in exchange for my honest opinion。 。。。more

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing, A。J。 Banner and Netgalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review。 Psychological thriller In Another Light, is the story of Phoebe, 43, a mortuary cosmetologist, who lost her husband and young daughter in a car accident three years before。 She is consumed by grief and has been simply going through the motions of living ever since。 She's brought out of her current state of existence when the body of a young woman is brought into the mortuary where Thank you to Lake Union Publishing, A。J。 Banner and Netgalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review。 Psychological thriller In Another Light, is the story of Phoebe, 43, a mortuary cosmetologist, who lost her husband and young daughter in a car accident three years before。 She is consumed by grief and has been simply going through the motions of living ever since。 She's brought out of her current state of existence when the body of a young woman is brought into the mortuary where she works。 Phoebe is shocked because the woman looks exactly like her and has a tattoo that is eerily familiar。 Though everyone keeps telling her it's nothing and to let it go, Phoebe can't help but dig into the mystery of who she is and what their connection might be。 As she looks into it further she comes across the unimaginable。 If you love unreliable narrators you will love this one。 Phoebe tells us what she knows and believes, but everyone around her tells her she's wrong。 Who do you believe? The book is about 250 pages, which makes for a really quick, one-sitting read。 There are quite a few twists and turns, but some are fairly predictable。 The ending surprised me a bit, because I saw only two ways the book could end, yet the author found a third way (sort of)。 The book gives you a good look at how grief can affect a person's mental health。 While it has an intriguing premise and I kept turning the pages, the story just didn't draw me in。 I didn't connect with the main character and everything just kind of felt a bit formulaic。 3½ starsRecommended for fans of: thrillers, suspense, family dramas, general fiction, and women's fiction。FYI: Possible trigger warning for anyone suffering from the loss of a spouse or child。 。。。more

I really liked the premise of this one, the idea that everyone has a doppelgänger is so interesting and I haven’t read many books about the subject, so I was hooked right away。 As usual with the author this was a binge worthy read, I never want to put her books down once I start them and always finish them in just a few sittings and this was no exception。 She does such a great job at conveying a sense of dread and paranoia in her books and Phoebe had so many reasons to be suspicious and paranoid I really liked the premise of this one, the idea that everyone has a doppelgänger is so interesting and I haven’t read many books about the subject, so I was hooked right away。 As usual with the author this was a binge worthy read, I never want to put her books down once I start them and always finish them in just a few sittings and this was no exception。 She does such a great job at conveying a sense of dread and paranoia in her books and Phoebe had so many reasons to be suspicious and paranoid which just heightened the intensity。 She also always manages to throw these curveballs at the reader in a sly way where I tend to wonder if I had been paying closer attention maybe I would’ve figured it out but she’s just so damn good at NOT saying things that make you assume something and then when other things are revealed you’re like, Oohh you sneaky thing you got me! And why does she have a photo that links her to Phoebe?I loved that throughout this book, as Phoebe is determined to get answers about this mystery woman, we also get the sense that we might have an unreliable narrator here due to some past trauma。 Is she bringing her own heartbreak into this and seeing things that just don’t really exist? Is she hoping for something that really can’t be true? Her character is so relatable and you can’t help but feel for her as she tries to navigate all that is happening。This book really takes you on quite the emotional ride and I could not break myself away from it。 There were so many questions to be answered and at times I thought I knew where it was heading, only to be thrown by secrets that were finally uncovered。I really enjoyed this book and loved how it tackles some heavy topics – grief and loss and even mental illness – in such an authentic way。 I think it’s a book that will appeal to most anyone that enjoys a good domestic thriller as it really keeps you guessing with some great twists and turns。 I definitely recommend this one!Audio thoughts: A。J。 Banner’s books translate really well onto audio and I really enjoyed listening to this one。 It’s narrated by Vaneh Assadourian, who is a new-to-me narrator, but I thought she did a fantastic job bringing this book to life。 Her pacing and intonation were spot on and she infused just the right amount of tension and emotion into her voice as needed。You can see all my reviews at: https://www。alwayswithabook。com 。。。more
